Rollie Fingers the player

Rollie Fingers (real name Roland Clan Fingers) was born 25/08/46. He was a right handed relief pitcher in MLB and played for a total of three teams during his career which spanned 17 years from ’68 to ’85.

Rollie made his debut in September 1968 playing for Oakland Athletics before moving on to the Padres in ’77. In 1981 He signed for the Milwaukee Brewers and saw his time out there until 1985.

Fingers first garnered major attention during the 1970’s and his highly ostentatious mustache helped to make him one of the most noticeable and easily indentifiable players in Baseball.

That mustache!

Fingers’ iconic handlebar mustache would come to be his trademark look and he would even grow it out and keep it well waxed during the off-season!

He originally grew it to get a $300 bonus from the Oakland A’s owner Charles O Finley. He subsequently decided to keep it throughout his playing career and still has it today.

Collecting cards that belonged to players from The Mustache Gang would be a great way to start an interesting spin off to your collecting hobby. The Mustache Gang was a phrase used to describe players from Oakland A’s who, by sporting moustaches, went against the traditional conservative rules of being clean shaven. Before the 1970’s very few players had facial hair as it was frowned on in the sport.
